Another Round is a large cauldron-like sculpture, suspended from the gallery ceiling and constructed from recycled timber. Inside, it holds Chatter (3mins 02sec), a commissioned sound work by Tikoda, an electronic and folk producer. Lining the interior are lino prints of symbols associated with brewing, echoing the maker’s marks used by medieval women.
The sculpture draws on the history of alewives and the vessels they might have used in beer-making, inspired by skillets and bronze cauldrons in the collection of the Museum of Somerset.
Chatter was developed in response to medieval broadsheet ballads, folkloric songs that depicted alewives, reimagining these narratives through sound. It incorporates recordings from Drop Bear Brewery’s machinery alongside hydrophone captures of fermentation from homebrewing, blending industrial and domestic processes. Tikoda combines these textures with semi-improvised electronic sequencing, aiming, in their words, “to imagine history as though it were a memory, exploring the emotions and textures of the past.”
Another Round and Chatter were first presented in Down the Hatch (2025), a solo exhibition commissioned by East Quay, Watchet and funded by Arts Council England.
