These works draw from a collection of pub signs from the Inn Society’s Archive, inverting the colours of the originals to move from traditional palettes toward contemporary tones, including pastels and pinks. The collage technique references the block-colour graphics of hand-painted signs while offering a more sculptural approach to drawing.
The title nods to the slang term for female genitalia and references the first pub sign, which depicted hops or vines hanging from a branch, connecting historical visual culture with queer perspectives.
The bespoke frames were made specifically for the work from found iroko timber which was previously used as decking. Holes and historical marks were purposeful left untouched. The same timber was also used in other parts of the exhibition as a boardwalk in larger sculptural works.
The Bush collage series were presented in Down the Hatch (2025), a solo exhibition commissioned by East Quay, Watchet and funded by Arts Council England.
