Four Step Ladder

‘Four Step Ladder’ is the documentation of a step ladder I found in a friend’s studio.

Over the course of Lathwood’s practice, ladders have been an important symbol of change, desire and aspiration. They are the quintessential tools to get over something, to conquer obstacles and shift a view point.

Each ladder is meticulously painted in gouache using a very fine brush or created with collage techniques, where precise cuts made with a scalpel form intricate, delicate lines. This process imparts an opaque quality to dense blocks of colour, adding depth and texture to the composition.

The ladders are created from imagination, observation, or contributions from others who share a fascination with them.
